How to convert decimal hours to time

Multiply decimal hours by 3,600 to get total seconds. Round that total to the nearest second, then split it into hours, minutes, and seconds.

START WITH TOTAL SECONDSrounded seconds = roundHalfUp(hours × 3600)
  1. Divide the rounded total by 3,600. The whole-number part gives the hours.
  2. Divide the remaining seconds by 60. The whole-number part gives the minutes.
  3. The final remainder gives the seconds.

Rounding the total first means a result like 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 59.9964 seconds correctly carries to 02:00:00.

Examples

7.75 hours → 07:45:00

7.75 × 3600 = 27900 seconds: 7 hours, 45 minutes, 0 seconds.

7.45 hours → 07:27:00

The decimal part, 0.45 hours, is 27 minutes. Decimal digits do not represent minutes directly.

0.1 hours → 00:06:00

0.1 × 3600 = 360 seconds, or exactly 6 minutes.

1.999999 hours → 02:00:00

1.999999 × 3600 = 7199.9964 seconds. This rounds to 7200 seconds, exactly 2 hours.
